Jeff at Toyz Unlimited gave me a tip to use a vice grip type c-clamp to put stress on the bearings. Sure enough the input shaft front bearing (not pilot) got rough to spin with little pressure. I wish I did record the noise while driving. Whining / rumbling can be subjective. To me, whining is higher pitch and rumbling is lower pitch. My noise is kind of in the middle.
What puzzles me is why there isn't any noise when driving in 4th gear.

Yes I did it to make the shifter 4" more forward. You have to change the shift rods and speedometer gear also.

I took a picture of the donor plate and it's S374 = 3.58
Doing tire searches the corolla comes up 155/80/13 = 22.8" dia.
185/70/13 = 23.2" dia. so I should be in the ball park.

The tach is labled neg. ground, and the 3tc is neg gnd. No problem there.
I finally got it working by reversing the coil wires on the tach loop. Key sw B+ to tach loop to igniter/coil+.

I always try to make something easy more difficult.
