Coil cutting question

Postby UtahSleeper on Sun Feb 26, 2012 9:18 pm

So, I have a spare set of coils I am planning on cutting. My question is, is there an estimate on how much each coil will drop it? This is on the rear of a TE72

one thing i kinda figered that we can do is this look if you have a scale and a jack put the jake under something solid or on top of the spring put the scale at the bottom jack till sterdy and wont move now jack till they get to 350lbs and get a torch and heat them then relive pressure and you have 350lbs lowered spings
peace , hope and love

when i cut the springs i have. i didnt cut the corolla springs, i got some cherokee springs, the diameter is the same, and i cut about 2 coils off. super stiff though.

I am just hoping to just cut and go for now. Now majot time spent doing this. Right now my current springs are uneven and I just want to even it till I can afford coilovers. Just hoping that someone has done it before I cut a coil and determine it is too low for me.

Hemi - Interesting concept, but doesnt heating springs weaken them? Thats what I have always heard. I dont actually know.

Nic - Good to know on the cherokee springs. What year range and any cherokee model?

cutting the springs weakens the aswell. anything you do to the stock spring is going to weaken it, heating it cutting it whatever

well my gfs dad runs a junkyard. and i was just talkin to him about it, and he said i know what you can use, and brought me some cherokee springs the next day. not sure what model but im sure they dont differ much!

my suggestion for what yo should do, just get some cheap coilover sleeves/spring combo from ebay clean up the stock perch and make it look nice, if you can get some mr2 strut inserts and shorten your strut housings while your at it!
use the cherokee springs in the back and you will be low and stiff!

I would like to go that route, but not in the financial option right now (have an alltrac I want to get running now and needs my cash). Later down the road I plan on getting Ground Controls all the way around and have a good, solid setup. Till then, I want to make this work so I can even out the springs in the rear (ones on the car are uneven) and lower it just enough to match the front. Thats why I was curious if anyway knew the estimates each coil dropped the car :)

I think you should just install some proper lowering springs and depending on how long down the road you plan to get your coilovers you can sell them. I cut my springs and I hate the ride :[ They're so bumpy, my shocks are blown, and I can feel the harshness to the chassis especially on those d@mn potholes you fall into causing that loud *BANG* grrr!

Just my two cents. But if you're determined, if I can recall, I have AE86 springs with 2 cut coils all around and it dropped a bunch..(didn't measure) but they are so low I have to stop at speed bumps or else my exhaust header will hit and loosen up again causing an annoying loud leak. I think the rears need to be cut a half coil more than the fronts for the chassis to be even with the pavement.

I know that the lowering springs are pretty cheap, but from what I understand that if you lower your vehicle the ride is going to suck unless you have struts/shocks that are meant for the ride height. Is this not correct?

I am not trying to lower the car much. Right now I have clamps lowering it and my only problem is the fact that one spring is uneven. I don't want it too much lower cause I want to keep the car happy when I take it to the track so I can learn to actually drive it :) That and the shocks and struts are new, so I dont want to have to replace them yet just to go lower. Mind you, if I am misunderstanding the effect lowering springs will have on shocks and struts then I may consider it. I could also just move the clamps over to the replacement springs.

One of my other issues is I dont like buying something that I KNOW I will be replacing. Especially since I dont like selling shit lol.
