gts rear end coilover swap/conv on a te72 wagon??

Postby SD Yota on Sun May 20, 2012 4:51 pm

so im curious to see if anyone's done a gts rear end swap on a wagon before. i know it entails going from leaf to a 4 link with a panhard bar but i'd like to see if anyones got any pictures or writeup on this? i hate how sacked out my rear leafs are and the poor control / tracking i have back there. i just did my ae86 front end swap and its so damn awesome up untill the rear hits the same piece of road and its like the back forgot to keep following the front. :?

ive considered doing some simple coilovers to stiffen the rear and add spring load to the rear suspension but feel that wont help tracking and axle wrap. so i'd have to add some lateral bars, and maybe a panhard to control the side to side motion of the axle...... witch all comes back down to just doing a GTS rear end and linking the rear end completely to just get it done right.

only issue i run into is everyone and their mom wants a rediculous amount for a damn gts rear end  my car is not swapped or is fast by any means. i just would like it to handle better.... or more so... as it SHOULD.

so...... with all that said. what's your guys' input on this??

some guys took the bottom half of a sedan, and put a wagon body on the frame haha. idk if you want to go through all that trouble.

i did the ae86 front end upgrade, (vented rotors, short stroke suspension setup etc.)

i dont wanna make this a whole project car but im weighing the end result of doing this upgrade. im also considering the celica rear end.... lots tougher with the 7.5 rear end, slightly better track, and all the same upgrade goodies. thing is the celica rear end is more common around here...

btw, here's my new front strut setup.

just get a SR-5 AE rear end, everyone is so damn infatuatied with rear disc brakes. you can put the Zenki TRD/Kaaz/Tomei/OS Giken into that rear end. If your really trying to go AE 4 link w/Panhard rod contact https://www.facebook.com/roy.tomkins he runs Pike Peak hill climb in a TE-72 2=door and got started fabricating cages/suspension for off road racing

I've actually been slowly considering what i can to do go this route, 4 link/coilover rear on the wagon.

I've been trying to do what i can with the existing leaf rear. What rear suspension mods have you done so far? I installed the rear sway bar the other day and it made a big difference. I also picked up a custom rear panhard bar but realized there is no room to install because of the shock positioning on the wagons.

I've also been looking into the idea of welding on some bars to the axle to prevent wrap like this te27:

Would love to see if anyone has done more serious rear suspension upgrade on the wagon.

who makes the rear swaybar? Thats a nice, clean undercarriage. I wish there were more corollas or celicas around me. Is the GTS favored just because the disk brakes?
