wasup guys,

couldn't find alot of info the forum on what you need to do this conversion. can anyone help me out.

what year starlet manual rack do you need? can another type of rack be used jsut as easily?

what other peices are necessary for this conversion?
- intermediate shaft?
- bushings?
- different brackets?
- what tie rods and steering knuckles should be used?
- any other types of mods need to be done to get this done?

ill update this post when i get the info. if its wrong let me know so i can change it.

1- 80 to 81 toyota starlet rack and pinion
2-try to grab the intermediate shaft from the starlet, later you will need to modify
3-take the bushings if you cand with the brackets to hold them down
4-if you can grab the whole steering shaft that goes inside the steering colum this way all you have to do is remove the stering box and shaft out of the te27 and this one will slide ride in,
5-you can use the te27 tie rods
6-you will need to modify your cross member to acomodate the rack and pinion

The problem on this is finding a used rack for a starlet cheap cause for the price that every one ask for a used one you can buy a new one. A new one goes for 250 to 300

I saw paulcorolla put an aw11 manual rack onto his te27. Not sure what intermediate shaft/u-joint/steering column he used though:

I'm wondering if you could just use the same set up as ae86 guys do to run manual racks (ae86 column, mkIII supra intermediate shaft, tercel/aw11 u-joint). They sell swaps on club4ag all the time for about $200. Then, all you miight need to source is the steering column. But....maybe the stock steering column will work?

I'm thinking about doing this swap into me te21

I just messaged paulcorolla on JNC and this was his response:

Ya it's just a aw11 rack and ae86 column, no special shaft as the te27 is smaller than the 86 it all fit pretty easy.
I'm on the third or fourth Revision, if you have access to an 86 I would measure the distance of the rack from the control arms to ensure proper geometry from the get go.
I've moved mine a couple times to optimize geometry.
Good luck, it's pretty easy, and it makes the car much more enjoyable to drive.
