I see. well, after driving for 30-40 mins the needle sits up at the top of the red area and sometimes move just a bit past the red almost to the "H". When I get home and park the car I pop the hood and the radiator is very hot to the touch. If the T-stat was stuck closed wouldnt the radiator be cold? Seems like with no coolant flowing through the radiator it wouldn't be so hot. Again, the car seems to be running fine otherwise. I am at a loss. It's also got a new water pump on it

Well today on my way home from work the fan/alternator belt broke. Engine overheated and spewed coolant everywhere. I was able to replace the belt and coolant and get the car home where I replaced the t-stat. Old T-stat was in upside down. new t-stat is properly installed. when I refilled the coolant after changing the t-stat i could tell the t-stat was opening as there was good flow through the radiator. still the temp needle reads in the red area on the gauge markings, though when the car truly overheats to the point of releiving itself of the coolant the needle pegs well up into the "H" on the gauge markings. t-stat is a 180*F unit. Seems like the only thing left is the radiator?

Here is a picture of where the temp guage needle has been sitting during normal driving.

Image

I put a temp probe in the radiator fins at the hottest point i could find on the radiator and it read 175*F.

Is it possible that the temp sender is just the wrong temp range for this guage? does 175*F seem about right for this car?

In the last 24hrs since the bet breaking and being replaced the temp needle was up a bit higher into the "H" on the guage, but the car was still running fine.

when the car is running at this temperature the water is not boiling over into the overflow tank.

thinking the sender is possibly the wrong range for this guage? Ordered a new sender today. we'll see what happens when it comes. I know the T-stat is opening at 180*F and coolant is circulating. temp probe I put in the radiator fins will display about 175-180*F after driving long enough to get the engine to the point you saw the guage needle at. With the guage needle above the red (as seen in the picture above) I would think my radiator temp probe in the fins would measure at least 200*F or higher!
