Adding Gear Oil Through the Shifter?

Post by jones737 »

Now that I have the exhaust system installed on my '81, I discovered I have a noise that sounds like a lack of gear oil in the transmission. When I finally got it up on the jacks, I noticed that the fill plug has been rounded off and ain't moving.

I have heard that gear oil can be added through the shifter, but I have not been able to confirm this with anyone yet. I noticed that the carpet around the shifter boot looks a little greasy and the carpet looks like it has been cut away and previously put back. I have not seen anything on Youtube or on here about this procedure.

Has anyone done this before? Did I miss a post on this forum about it?

Thanks!

yes you can but you need to drain it first then fill it with the recommended amount and as far as it goes go the the junk yard find a rwd trans in a Toyota with a 17mm plug and take yours off and replace it so you wont be guessing

I wouldnt add blindly, I would try and vise grip the upper bolt off. Sometimes you have to hit the vise grip with a hammer to shock it off. You can then fill from shifter but you have to add a little then wait, add, wait. If you just keep adding till you see the oil start coming out, you waste a lot because takes a little time to travel from shifter to body. I add from bottom, clamp some 3/8 fuel line to quart bottle and squeeze, less mess.

If you cant get it off then do what hemilove suggested.
