1982 T-50 Bellhousing

Post by tavirace »

I thought I saw somewhere that 1982 3tc's came with the larger input shaft T-50 transmissions similar to the later AE-86 T-50 transmissions and had a different style bell housing. Can anyone verify if this is true or not?I have a later transmission and the bell-housings i have don't fit in the front bearing area. Thanks Tavirace

Hopefully this helps, done a lot of research into T50 and different T series bellhousings.
Up to approx August 1981 had 62mm OD x 16mm deep input shaft ball bearing. Then in TE71 after august 1981 had 68mm OD x 16mm ball bearing then changed approx June 1982 to 68mm OD x 18mm roller bearing. The later, 68mm, housings have a square shaped flange on the throw out bearing support tube. If it has a round flange the housing won't fit over input bearing.
I have been trying to find the latest TE72 housing, here in Australia, for over two years because I have a late AE86 T50 with a new TRD gear kit which I wish to install behind my next 2t/3tc engine.

Wow this is the first time I'm hearing about this. Thanks for the great information!

AFAIK the larger input shaft bearing coincided with the output shaft changing from 20 spline to 22 spline. (all are 21 spline input). Yep the bellhousing locates on the input shaft bearing so they don't interchange without first machining out the bearing seat.
From what i've seen, 3t only came with a 22 spline t50 and prior to that, a w50. But the 2t/2tgeu had a changeover around '82 from 20 spline to 22 spline.

crikey toyTA22, over here we have trouble giving them away. The 4age boys snap up the 22spline t50's and scrap the T bell.
Instead of trying to find a te72, the facelift late '82 and '83 te71 had em. Also the '83 and later ta61 celica and carina and 3t t50 powered tt132, tt141 corona may be an easier find.
