Use a feeler gauge for .05 (I could be wrong, but I don't think he meant .5, since that would be 1/2 of an inch). Spark plug gaps are around .031 or so.

.05 = 50/1000; .5= 500/1000
i just got my 3tc head shaved for more comp about a month ago. i told them .05" and i just measured it at .02" grrrr. BUT I hear .050 makes a significant difference.
