3tc What size exhaust?

I have an 82 Corolla with a 3TC in it. The last owner put a 2.5 straight pipe on it and so it sounds like a hondas fart can..
I was thinking I could put a reducer on the end to build back pressure to help quiet it down and maybe gain some mid range responsiveness.
I was thinking 1 inch and 7/8ths? What size do you think?
