You all seem surprised, driving around the Island waves crashing in the beach, driving along the coast as waves of sea-water break into mist of salt air, and a 10 year car tax that makes it almost impossible to maintain a car with the now annual safety inspections. While the car may seem in good condition, the rust is working its way up from under the paint and in corners of that primer red thin metal. First year car is on the road a three year inspection, then two year inspections until the car reaches ten yens old then the inspections become annually.
The cost of maintaining a old car is very expensive. Mind you, I was there when these cars were brand new, I collected the new car manuals, walked around the showroom and dreamed of owning one of these new cars, couldn't bring myself to buy one since I couldn't bring it back home; so knowing and seeing the results of that climate on those grand old cars, I can see why they are bone-yard memories.
