TE72 rearend ratio?

Post by 61Alpine »

What is the rearend ratio of a TE72L? A donor car for the 3TC & W50 going into a '61 Sunbeam Alpine.
I modified the speedometer cable to fit the alpine. Alpines end is thicker.
The tires are about the same (185/70/13), The Sunbeam ratio is 3.89/1.
Depending on the donor's ratio, I'll be able to figure if the speedometer will be near accurate.
If not accurate are there other T50 gear drives available?

I have seen 3.58, 3.72, 3.90 and 4.10. There is a rear end code on the firewall tag. Should start with a S followed by 3 numbers.
If the donor car has 185/70/13 from the factory then I assume its an SR5. I have only seen 3.58 and 3.72 in those but I notice that things that are common in Hawaii are rare on the mainland and vice versa.
If you get the speedo gear from the 3.90 trans then should be pretty close. Im pretty sure its like a ring and pinion and the inside part has to match also.

Fantastic chart, I couldn't find any info on this.
I took a picture of the donor plate and it's S374 = 3.58
Doing tire searches the corolla comes up 155/80/13 = 22.8" dia.
185/70/13 = 23.2" dia. so I should be in the ball park.
A GPS will tell true!

Thanks, much appreciated.

I'm not in the ball park.
Driving around 40mph the speedometer reads around 50, at around 70mph speedometer reads around 85.
The tranny was getting noisy in all but direct drive so I took it apart but didn't find any problems.
While it's apart I would like to find a 3.9 speedometer gear set for a t50. Anyone have a clue where I could find a set?

Toyota??

I have a 1983 coupe, it also had the S374 final drive.... I have a friend who owns a 1983 Hardtop and I'm pretty sure he has the 3.9 - S314 final drive....
