having auto trans fitting issues

i just mated a used a40 from a salvage yard to my 82 3tc but after puting it in the car i noticed a scraping sound when i turned the crank and flywheel to install the torque converter bolts, so i removed the starter which caused the scraping sound but i also noticed the flexplste was too far from the torque conveter to get a bolt on it. so my question is are there different starters, torque converters, and or flexplates for this trans mission or is the flexplate just bent or something.

Well after due diligence I finally figured out what I believe to be the issue I'll know for sure Monday
